The U.S. will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other African countries to contain the new variant of the coronavirus. The W.H.O. said the new variant detected in South Africa was " of concern " and gave it the name Omicron. At least 10 other countries have halted or restricted flights. There is no proof yet that the variant is more contagious or lethal, or could diminish the protective power of Covid-19 vaccines, but uncertainty on those questions was one factor in the speed with which countries moved toward restrictions.
